Business

Everyone has heard of Comic-Con, right? If you just answered “No” then you should probably stop reading today’s newsletter, because I geek out about comic books later in this edition.

There’s news that Tom Brady and Derek Jeter have partnered with Fanatics Events to create the sports world equivalent to Comic-Con. They’re calling it…drum roll please…Fanatics Fest NYC. It’ll be a 3-day event that will be held at New York City’s Javits Center where Comic-con and other large car shows and events are held each year. The event will feature multiple stages, features and games, merchandise and trading card areas, and a museum displaying rare cards and sports memorabilia.

They’ve already lined up a pretty group of sports celebrities for the event in addition to both Tom Brady and Derek Jeter, and will include appearances from Eli and Peyton Manning, Kevin Durant, and Hulk Hogan (come again?).

The concept is to have representation from each of the major U.S.-based sports leagues including the NFL, NBA, WNBA, MLB, NHL, MLS, UFC, and WWE.

These kinds of conventions practically print money. Tickets will range from $20 to $400, with general admission tickets priced at $50 per day. They expect between 50,000 and 100,000 fans for this first event, and typically that grows each year as more people hear about it and buy tickets in advance. It’s not unusual for these kinds of events to sell out at the Javits Center

Both Tom Brady and Derek Jeter have been very successful in their post-sports careers, and this new yearly sports convention is just another feather in the cap for both of these amazing athletes-turned-business man.

Food

What do you do if you want a perfectly cooked steak, but can’t find a restaurant that makes it just the way you like? You build your own restaurant!

That’s what Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes are doing. They’re opening their own steakhouse in Kansas City.

The restaurant is scheduled to open in 2024; hopefully in time for the kick-off of the 2024 NFL season.

It’ll be a great place for them to go celebrate their wins, and hoist another Superbowl trophy in celebration!

When reached for comment Patrick Mahomes said “Travis and I have become frequent visitors of Noble 33 restaurants in other cities, so it only made sense to bring something special to our own community in Kansas City.”

Travis Kelce was quick to add “We’re excited to be a part of this journey with Noble 33 to create a one-of-a-kind dining experience, and what better place to start than our very own, Kansas City.”

The steakhouse will be 10,000 square feet, and named 1587 Prime in homage to both of their jersey numbers. There are two floors, including multiple private dining rooms, and a chef’s kitchen - you know, for those private Taylor Swift dinners after a win!

No doubt the steakhouse will be decorated with Kansas City Chiefs memorabilia and both Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce swag - because what’s the point of owning your own restaurant if you can’t flex a little showing off your jerseys and trophies.

Comic Books

When I was a teenager I used to mow lawns to earn enough money to take the bus into the city on the weekends to go to the comic book store and buy each week’s new comic books, and continue expanding my collection of old Daredevil comics.

I was never that into Superman, because the idea that someone was so powerful they could never be defeated seems like a scam on my young imagination.

But boy do I wish my grandfather had collected Superman comic books!

Recently, the comic book that contains Superman’s very first appearance sold for $6 million dollars!

It was originally printed in 1938, the version sold was part of a larger collection of 250 first run editions spanning from 1937 into the 1940s - otherwise known as the golden era of comic books.

Man that would have been a sweet comic book for my family to have owned. If only I could go back in time and convince my grandfather to buy it and hold onto it until his grandson is born someday. Hmmmm.

If you’ve ever cruised, you know there’s a LOT of people watching going on.

In the era of social media, it was just a matter of time before passengers took it upon themselves to begin documenting all of the drama that goes on during a long-term cruise.

On Royal Caribbean’s “Serenade of the Seas” is a nine month long cruise around the world, stopping on all 7 continents, the passengers have a lot of time on their hands. Add in some iPhone 13s and high speed Starlink internet, and you have a recipe for multiple YouTube and TikTok channels feeding an insatiable appetite for cruise drama!

That appetite has extended to people whose feet are still planted firmly on shore and who have never ventured on a cruise before, but found themselves going down the cruise drama rabbit hole. A whole crop of TikTokers and YouTubers who aren’t even on the cruise have sprung up to share with their audience what is going on with the cruisers who they are following on TikTok. It’s enough to make my head hurt, but yet I’ll admit I’ve tuned in - because I apparently love drama!

As you can imagine, taking a 9 month long cruise can’t be cheap. Prices per person range from $59,999 to $117,599 per person, before you add in taxes, fees, or any shore excursions and adult beverages.

So if you miss watching the Jersey Shore, and love drama, check out TikTok for coverage of Royal Caribbean’s “Serenade of the Seas” nine month cruise around the world, and the color commentary of those watching from shore.

Feel Good

OMG have I ever told you how much I LOVE goats?!?!

When I read this story, I turned to my wife and asked, “Can we adopt a goat?” She’s used to these kinds of questions from me, and had a quick “No” ready to respond, then I showed her this article…and that still didn’t convince her but at least I tried.

The remote Italian island of Alicudi has about 100 full time residents, and in a good year they have only about 100 wild goats. This isn’t a good year.

There are now an estimated 600+ wild goats overwhelming the small island. Now the residents of the small Italian island of Alicudi are offering a free goat to anyone who can catch them.

The “adopt-a-goat” program is pretty simple - you can keep any goats you can catch, as long as you take the goats off the island. It’s that simple. As you can imagine, the residents of this small island have had enough of these goats eating everything on the island, and they just want them gone!

So if you don’t have any plans for this Summer, consider taking a trip to the Italian island of Alicudi and pick up as many goats as you can carry.
